Police: Arrested man spits on face of nurse

He reportedly threatened life of officer and officer’s family on the way to jail

NEW ALBANY — A man assaulted a New Albany Police Department officer and a Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services nurse before being booked into the Floyd County Jail early Sunday morning, police say.

Brayden A. Dannenfelser, 21, of 3801 E. Luther Road in Floyds Knobs, was taken into custody after NAPD officers responded to a fight-in-progress call about 8 p.m. Saturday in the 300 block of West Eighth Street, a residential area in New Albany. NAPD Maj. Keith Whitlow said Dannenfelser’s “intoxicated condition” led authorities to transport him to the hospital before he was taken to the jail.

Whitlow said Dannenfelser was verbally abusive and noncompliant with responding officers, and while he was being placed on a stretcher, “he grabbed hold of an officer’s arm and threatened to kill him and his family.”

He continued to use vulgar language at the hospital, Whitlow said, and at one point, “he spit in the face of an attending nurse.”

After being released from the hospital, Dannenfelser was booked into the jail about 12:15 a.m.

He has been preliminarily charged with battery by bodily waste, a class D felony, and battery of police and resisting law enforcement, both class A misdemeanors, and disorderly conduct and public intoxication, both class B misdemeanors.

In August 2011, Dannenfelser was sentenced to 26 days incarceration after being found guilty of invasion of privacy — violation of protective order, a class A misdemeanor, in Floyd County Superior Court No. 3.

Dannenfelser was charged in Floyd County Superior Court No. 2 in July 2010 with battery and disorderly conduct, both class B misdemeanors. Two months later, the battery charge was dismissed and he was sentenced to 30 days in jail for the disorderly conduct charge.
