Houndmouth's homecoming: Southern Indiana band riding wave of success

LOUISVILLE —

A local act gaining national attention will be returning home Friday.

New Albany-based four-piece Houndmouth, fresh off of a tour in Europe and another appearance at South-by-Southwest, will open the concert season at Iroquois Amphitheater in Louisville.

Houndmouth, which consists of Matt Myers, vocals and guitar, Katie Toupin, keyboards and vocals, Zak Appleby, bass, and Shane Cody, drums, formed a little more than a year ago and played their first show in Dec. 2011.

Since first hitting the stage, the indie pop-rock band with a heavy folk influence has been on a skyrocketing climb.

The band traveled to the SXSW music festival, twice, landed a spot in last year's Forecastle Festival, released its first EP in August, have been featured in “Rolling Stone” and the group's first full-length album “From the Hills Below the City” is set to be released June 4.

“Its been pretty life-changing, I guess,” Myers said of the last year for the Southern Indiana group.

He said he was in school and had a full-time job, the other members in the band were working, but with Houndmouth's meteoric success, they are working stiffs no more.

“We all got the band together and kept going,” Myers said.

The whirlwind isn't about to end.

This summer the band will head to Europe again before returning stateside to play Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in June, Lolapallooza in Chicago and the Outside Lands festival, in San Francisco, both in August among other dates.

When the group headed overseas they were opening for another band that has risen to instant stardom, Alabama Shakes.

“Europe was great,” Myers said of the group's time on the road. “France was a little strange for us; we didn't translate to the crowd, I guess,” he added with a laugh.
