Huber’s to grow distillery business

Changes in law put distilleries on even playing field

STARLIGHT — Huber’s Orchard, Winery and Vineyards will announce details of its expanded venture into the whiskey, vodka and gin distillery business Thursday.

Changes in state law allow Indiana distilleries to sell spirits by the glass and bottle the same as wineries and breweries. Before the Statehouse approved the new legislation, only brandy could be sold directly to customers by distillers.

“That was very limiting,” State Rep. Ed Clere, a supporter of the new law, stated in a news release issued by Huber’s Starlight Distillery Monday afternoon.

“As with wine and beer, visitors want the total experience, including the ability to taste and purchase products, and the law didn’t allow that. Now the potential is unlimited.”

Huber’s already garners more than 550,000 visitors a year, and the expansion of the distillery operation will only enhance the business and tourism in the area, said Ted Huber, the sixth generation co-owner of Huber’s Orchard and the master distiller.

“We now have the ability to take advantage of our craft distilling expertise, which will lead to a more solid and diverse product line for future generations of our company,” Huber said.

The Starlight Distillery was founded in 2001, and is a member of the American Craft Distilling Association and the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, or DISCUS.

“The Huber’s have been national leaders in the revival of small distilling in the United States,” DISCUS Senior Vice President Frank Coleman stated in the news release. “Through hard work and productive partnerships with legislative leaders, they have gone a long way to modernizing the marketplace in Indiana.”

Huber’s will host a press conference Thursday evening to detail its plans for growing Starlight Distillery. Read that coverage in Friday’s edition and at newsandtribune.com
