COLD FOR A CAUSE: Ice Bowl to honor friend, support charity

NEW ALBANY — It’s not the kind of weather forecast that typically inspires one to grab their clubs, head off to the course and play a round of golf.

Most predictions are calling for temperatures just a few degrees more than the freezing mark.

But they call it the Ice Bowl for a reason.

The second annual Ice Bowl will tee off at 1 p.m. Saturday at the New Albany Springs Golf Course off Graybrook Lane. A fun way to embrace the winter cold and get a round in, this year's event also has a deeper cause.

Gil Smith, regular at the course for 35 years, dating back to when the 9-hole setup was known as the New Albany Country Club, passed away last year.

The avid golfer also had a love for animals and wouldn’t tolerate cruelty toward them, said Rick Kimes, owner of the bar and grill that accompanies the golf course, The New Albany Roadhouse.

So organizers of the Ice Bowl decided to not only name this year’s event after Smith, but to also donate all proceeds from the scramble to his family’s favorite nonprofit organization.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will be the recipient of the profits from this year’s Ice Bowl.

“We decided if we were going to have one, we should have it for a good reason,” Kimes said.

The Gil Smith Ice Bowl will be played in a four-person scramble format at a cost of $160 per team. The entry cost includes greens fees, cart rental and food that will be served at The New Albany Roadhouse following the 9-hole round.

For information on registering a team, call either 812-981-7777 or 812-949-5090.

The New Albany Roadhouse will also be open Sunday for the Super Bowl.
