NEW ALBANY —
A plethora of events are planned for October as the New Albany-Floyd County Animal Shelter attempts to find homes for cats and dogs.
In honor of Adopt a Shelter Dog month, the local shelter has dubbed October as Dogtoberfest.
Some events have already been held, and several more are scheduled including Barktoberfest, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in New Albany.
From 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, the Horseshoe Casino and Hotel of Southern Indiana will sponsor a free Cruise-In event to benefit the local and Harrison County shelters.
The event is being held on the fourth level parking garage at the casino, and trophies will be awarded for several vehicle categories.
A $10 donation will also be rewarded with a $15 gaming card for the casino.
The shelter, with the help of the Floyd County Animal Rescue League, is again giving away Dogtoberfest Mugs to those who adopt a dog during October.
For $3, the Wick’s Pizza Parlor in New Albany will fill the mugs with a New Albanian Brewing Co. Strassenbrau beer from Oct. 14 through Oct. 31.
The mugs can also be filled with a free soft drink during October at The Exchange.
The mugs will also be filled with coupons at the shelter when the adoption is finalized.
“Opportunities for people to either obtain a new pet or have an opportunity to come and see the types of pets we have for adoption,” said David Hall, director of the NA-FC Animal Shelter.
But it’s not all about the dogs, as cats want their paws on the specials as well.
From noon to 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, the shelter is hosting Freaky Feline Friday.
During the event, the first five adopted cats are free. The next 15 cats adopted will be $5, and the final 15 felines adopted will be $15.
The specials apply only to cats that weigh more than four pounds.
Hall said the shelter has an abundance of cats in need of good homes, and even though the event applies more to older cats, there’s still plenty of kittens and younger felines available.
“We have everything but little balls of fluff,” Hall said.
