Celebrate Juneteenth in New Albany

Events include kids’ parade, Underground Railroad performance

NEW ALBANY —

It was June 19, 1865, when slaves heard they were free. To commemorate this historical event, there was a joyous celebration throughout the south which they named Juneteenth. 

This tradition is now celebrated throughout the world emphasizing respect, appreciation of freedom and the achievements of many. 

The New Albany Parks Department staff invites area families to join the staff on Tuesday, June 18, to celebrate the cultural differences of all people. 

Juneteenth events include:

• 2:30 p.m. — Kids’ parade and history lesson, Riverfront Amphitheater;  

• 4 p.m. — Kids’ Fun Zone opens, Griffin Street Park;

• 4 p.m. — Exhibits, booths and live music;

• 4:30 p.m. — Senior citizens poor folks supper, $2 meal, soda $1; meal includes chicken, collard greens, potatoes, cornbread, peach cobbler or sweet potato pie;

• 6 p.m. — “Nothing Stops This Train” a dramatic performance about the Underground Railroad, presented by the River Institute Traveling Drama Team from Hanover College.

• 7:15 p.m. — Ice cream and cake social hour

All events will be held at the Griffin Street Center except for the kids parade. Call 812-949-PARK to reserve free seats for the performance.
