5k race scheduled for Independence Day

‘Dog Days’ event headed back to Georgetown Drive-in

NEW ALBANY —

The New Albany Board of Public Works and Safety approved the use of the Riverfront Amphitheater for the July 4 5k Water Run.

The event will start and end at the Amphitheater, and registration will begin at 8 a.m. on Independence Day.

There will be various age groups to enter with prizes given to the top male and female runners in each category.

The course will wind through downtown and uptown, and volunteers will set stations up throughout the run to douse participants with water for a quick cool off if so desired.

Sponsors include Develop New Albany, the city of New Albany and the New Albany Bicentennial Commission.

The cost is $20 for pre-registration, which includes a T-shirt, or $15 ahead of race day without a shirt. You can also register on the day of the race for $20, which doesn’t include a T-shirt.

Volunteers are sought to assist with the race. For more information, call Stefanie Griffith at 502-645-6256.

DRIVE-IN HOSTING ADOPTION EVENT

The annual Dog Days at the Drive-In will be held at the Georgetown Drive-In on Saturday.

Dogs on leashes and their owners will be admitted into the event for $2, and all the fees collected will be donated to the New Albany-Floyd County Animal Shelter.

Along with a bounce house and inflatable slide for kids, the movies “Man of Steel” and “Monsters University” will be shown during Dog Days.

NA-FC Animal Shelter Director David Hall said there will be different organizations including the local shelter at the event with pets for adoption.

Dogs will be treated to an obstacle course, and there will be booths set up with special concessions just for canines.

Gates will open for the event at 6 p.m., and Hall said it’s usually widely attended.

“They generally have to start turning people away,” Hall said of the crowds.
