10 P.M. UPDATE: Impending Arctic blast forces cancellations, closings across Southern Indiana

NA-FC, Greater Clark close school on Monday

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — The Arctic blast and snow expected overnight and tomorrow are lighting up the cancellation board in Southern Indiana.

New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School Corp., Clarksville Community Schools, Greater Clark Community Schools and West Clark Community Schools will be closed on Monday, according to their websites. Indiana University Southeast and Ivy Tech Community College in Sellersburg will be closed Monday as well.

The Clark County Government Building also will be closed Monday, according to County Commissioner Rick Stephenson.

All outpatient and administrative offices for LifeSpring will be closed Monday and applies to programs in Clark, Floyd, Harrison, Jefferson, Scott and Washington counties.

Numerous schools, school districts, colleges, cities and counties announced they would be closed Monday as the National Weather Service warned of deadly wind chills as low as 45 below zero possible through Tuesday. The General Assembly also postponed the opening day of its 2014 session Monday, and the state appellate courts, including the Indiana Supreme Court, said they would be closed.

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security reports 30 counties in western and northern Indiana are asking residents to stay off of roads because of dangerous conditions.

The counties that have issued travel warnings that stretch from Newton to Sullivan counties along the Illinois state line and as far northeast as LaGrange County and as far southeast as Henry County.

Another 19 counties — ranging from Posey County in southwest Indiana to Steuben County in the northeast — have issued travel watches, meaning conditions are threatening to public safety. Residents in those counties are asked to use roads only for essential travel, such as for work or emergencies.

Another 22 counties have issued travel advisories, which means routine travel or activities may be restricted in areas because of a hazardous situation.
