Floyd Memorial Foundation accepting grant applications

NEW ALBANY — The Floyd Memorial Hospital Foundation is accepting mini-grant applications from nonprofit organizations looking to supplement projects with the goal of improving the health status of the community.

The foundation will award 10 grants valued at $1,000 each to organizations who can effectively demonstrate the scope and purpose of their project that would address obesity, heart disease/stroke and cancer through means aimed at improving nutrition, fitness levels and smoking cessation, according to a press release.

In 2012, Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services unveiled a new community health needs assessment tool that includes more than 100 nationally recognized measurements rating the overall health status of Floyd County residents.  The health needs assessment, available to the public at, uses data compiled from governmental and nongovernmental agencies that is automatically updated as the most recent data becomes available. Floyd Memorial also coordinated an effort to capture qualitative primary data from Floyd County residents and leaders through focus groups and a communitywide survey.

Through this assessment, consistent health priorities were discovered among all data sources [community survey, focus groups and CHNA data] including adult and childhood obesity, heart disease and stroke, cancer and diabetes. In response to this, the Floyd Memorial Foundation has dedicated $10,000 to monetarily support nonprofit organizations that are also focused on combating these growing health concerns.

To get a copy of the grant application requirements go to, Healthy Communities Initiative. Applications are due Sept. 1.
