New Albany police: Road rage ends in display of firearm

New Albany man charged in incident

NEW ALBANY — A man has been charged after admitting to police he displayed a firearm from his vehicle to other motorists, according to a New Albany Police Department report.

Police were called by one of the motorists Sunday, Jan. 20, regarding a road-rage incident.

After calling police, the motorist told the responding officer that a vehicle had been following him and that the driver had pulled up beside him and pointed a small, silver firearm at him and his pregnant girlfriend.

The man with the gun was later identified as Jesse D. Evans, 21, of 2507 Roanoke Ave., and the firearm was identified as a .22-caliber handgun.

When officers arrived to the complainant’s call, the motorist was able to point out the vehicle driven by Evans, which was then stopped by police. Evans said that he had displayed the weapon to the man and woman, but that he had not pointed it at them.

Police reported that Evans had only an identification card, and had never been licensed to drive.

He was charged in Floyd County Superior Court No. 1 with pointing a firearm, a class D felony, carrying a handgun without a license, a class A misdemeanor, and operating a motor vehicle without ever receiving a license, a class C misdemeanor.

Court records do not indicate when Evans’ next court appearance on the above charges will take place.

Evans was convicted of C felony burglary in September 2011 in a Floyd County court, following a home break-in that occurred earlier in the year.

He was sentenced to four years in the Indiana Department of Correction with a two-year term of suspended probation.

New Albany police reported that a resident of the home found a man in the residence walking around with a flashlight. Police arrived at the home and arrested the man as he was coming out the back door of the home.
