New Albany Rotarians honor veterans

NEW ALBANY — Remembering those who had fallen and thanking the ones who came home were the biggest reasons for the Rotary Club of New Albany’s veterans’ tribute held Thursday.

The tribute is usually held the Thursday before Veterans Day, which is on Sunday.

Bill Ryall, a member of the club, said the tradition started 14 years ago to honor servicemen and servicewomen inside and outside the club.

Along with singing of the armed forces’ songs, students from Floyd Central High School’s Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps — Alyson Gill and George Emily — gave presentations about what Veterans Day meant to them.

Ryall said having the students there gave a new generation of people a look at the club.

“It’s an opportunity for them to see what Rotary Club is all about,” Ryall said. “It gives them a chance to see all the community leaders that are involved who respect past and present service from veterans.”

The club also inducted a new member. Joe Glover, athletic director at Indiana University Southeast, was recognized as the newest member.

Ryall said it was nice to honor the veterans who were there, but it was bittersweet for those they’ve lost.

“We’ve lost five members of our greatest generations,” Ryall said. “Five of our members served in World War II, but we have other members from other wars and conflicts here today.”
