Scholarships application deadline nears
Business Professional Women of New Albany is accepting applications for the 2013 round of academic scholarships for Southern Indiana women pursuing secondary education opportunities. The BPW 5K Run for Education is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 7. The second race is the means to achieving BPW’s goal of granting $10,000 in scholarships each year. The race takes place at the New Albany Amphitheater and on the Ohio Valley Greenway. Registration is $20 and includes a T-shirt, goodie bag and lots of community fun.
Eligible scholarship applicants must be enrolled in the 2013-14 academic year as a full-time undergraduate or half-time graduate student, carry cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent, and show evidence of need. The application deadline is June 1.

Adult reading program under way
The Charlestown Clark County Public Library is pleased to host the Adult Summer Reading Program through July 31 for all adult library cardholders.
Join today at your nearest branch or visit www.clarkco.lib.in.us to register and log your books online. Each book read will equal 200 minutes and will put you in the running to receive tote bags, books, gift cards, and even a chance to win a one-night stay at the Old Bridge Inn Bed and Breakfast in Jeffersonville.
Book sale set for Saturday
Friends of the New Albany Library’s annual beach book sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, June 1, in the library’s Annex Building at the corner of Scribner Drive and Spring Street.
All paperbacks in fiction and mystery will sell for a quarter. Regular prices are $1 for hardbacks; 50 cents for videos, DVDs and paperbacks; 25 cents for audio book cassette tapes; and 10 cents for magazines and music cassette tapes. Children’s books are available at prices of $1 or less.
Help rescue the rescuers
Dogs and their families are welcome to the Rescue the Rescuers adoption event from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at New Albany Farmer’s Market, 202 E. Market St. New Albany.
Come out and see a variety of regional rescues and support the needs of homeless animals. Funds raised from the general raffle are split between every rescue you see at this event.
A microchip clinic will also be conducted by Crosscreek Housecall. The cost is $20 per pet.
Meet & Mingle at the library
The New Albany-Floyd County Public Library will host the monthly Meet & Mingle at 11:30 a.m. June 3. in the Strassweg Auditorium.
Dixon Romney, co-owner of Dedicated to You/Nutrition Education will discuss how to prevent disease, sharpen your thinking, boost your energy and take charge of your life.

Register for adult reading program
The New Albany-Floyd County Public Library is offering the Adult Summer Reading Challenge running through July 31. The theme for this year is “Groundbreaking Reads.”
You can either register at the Reference Services Desk or on your home computer. Participants simply fill out a short review online then submit it. Each entry will be chance for a prize. Drawings for mini-prizes will be held on Mondays and Fridays beginning June 3. There will be several grand prize drawings on Aug. 1 featuring a Kindle, a free haircut and style at Strandz & Threadz, and a complimentary ticket for two to Derby Dinner Playhouse, and some restaurant coupons.
