New Albany man charged with molesting 5-year-old girl in Jeffersonville

Allegations made after suspect’s relatives warn mother

JEFFERSONVILLE — A 66-year-old man is charged with molesting a 5-year-old girl at a home in Jeffersonville.

Melvin Lee Bright, who is listed in court records as living on Riverside Drive in New Albany, is charged in Clark County Circuit Court with class C felony child molesting.

The mother of the alleged victim said she received several calls from two of Bright’s family members inquiring about Bright’s involvement with her children, according to an affidavit for probable cause. The mother said that there was no involvement, except that Bright had been living at her residence and sometimes watching the children and escorting them to the bus stop.

The two female relatives of Bright told the mother that they had been abused and molested by Bright for years. They said Bright has a history of sexual battery and molestation, according to the affidavit.

The Evening News could find no record of Bright being charged in any other crime locally.

The victim’s mother told police that Bright had been a friend of her estranged husband and had been living with them until he suddenly moved out in December, leaving behind several pieces of property and possessions. The allegations of sexual abuse were made in early January.

After speaking with Bright’s relatives, the alleged victim’s mother questioned each of her children. Her 5-year-old reportedly said that Bright had asked her to lie down with him one day and touched her private areas, which she demonstrated using a teddy bear.

Bright took a polygraph examination in February and showed deception, according to court records.

After a warrant was issued last week, Bright was arrested in Louisville and was extradited to Clark County. He was released Monday morning from the Clark County Jail after posting $5,000 cash bond.
