Community Foundation hands out fall grants

More than $114,000 given to charitable groups

NEW ALBANY — Blessings in a Backpack, Friends of the Ohio River Greenway and Brandon’s House Counseling Center are among the 51 charitable organizations that will receive grants from the Community Foundation of Southern Indiana.

The organization announced its fall grants on Tuesday, as $114,525 will be awarded during the cycle.

The money for the grants comes through the Community Foundation Endowment Fund, and 77 grant applications totaling $347,909 were submitted to the organization for the fall cycle.

“These grants are made possible because of the generous unrestricted gifts of donors who want to give back to their community,” Crystal Gunther, grant and program officer for Community Foundation, stated in a news release.

“We can’t thank our volunteers and area nonprofits enough because they work so hard to help this community.”

Community Foundation relied on a committee of 20 volunteers to help research the applications.

The grants will benefit programs that aid, for example, in speech therapy, family counseling and after school literacy programs.

Gunther conceded that the needs in Southern Indiana will always outweigh the help Community Foundation is able to provide.

“Because of this, our commitment to these donors and this region, the committee works diligently to ensure our donors’ intentions are followed by identifying how organizations plan to use their funding, how those programs will impact our community, and how the Foundation’s grant will assist these programs and support the organization’s mission,” she said.
