New Albany drug roundup lands more than 20 behind bars

NEW ALBANY —  New Albany Police officers headed up a drug roundup Wednesday morning that resulted in more than 20 arrests. There were 26 arrest warrants issued following the investigation that lasted six months.

The charges range from dealing to using illegal drugs. Most of those arrested were from Floyd County.

“The undercover officers with the New Albany Police Department did an outstanding job,” said Floyd County Prosecutor Keith Henderson. “All the agencies involved should be commended.”

He said not all of those arrested were familiar with one another.

“We will continue to aggressively prosecute these crimes,” Henderson said.

Henderson, and New Albany Police Chief Sherri Knight, said the drug of choice now is heroin. Henderson said due to its price, and the crackdown on prescription drug abuse in recent years, heroin has increased in popularity.

“I think the use of heroin has changed in the last 12 months,” Henderson said. “We’ve seen the tide change. Heroin now has a greater impact on our community in the last six months.”

He said overdose deaths due to heroin have also increased.

“It [heroin] has a lower price on the streets and is very potent,” Henderson said. “Some laws have changed and we have seen a crack down on illegal prescription drug use. The medical community has also responded and prescribing of narcotics is scrutinized. We know heroin is fairly cheap.”

Knight said her department has not seen an increase in home break-ins, due to drug use, in the last year.

“There is no relation to one another,” she said of burglaries and drug use.
