New Albany native dies in Illinois tornado

Kathy Walker George, 58, graduated from NAHS

Alice Miles said her friend Kathy Walker George loved genealogy and talking on the phone. On Sunday, George, 58, was one of six people in Illinois killed by an outbreak of tornadoes that ripped across the Midwest.

George grew up in New Albany and was a graduate of New Albany High School. She moved to Brookport, Ill., as an adult.

“I knew Kathy for years,” Miles said.

Miles said the two shared a cousin in Chicago who talked to George a few weeks prior to Sunday’s tornado.

Miles said she found out about George’s death Sunday night. George’s husband, Charles, is in serious condition and has been in an induced coma since the storm, Miles said.

Services for Walker will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at Ninth Street Church of Christ, 715 S. Ninth St., Paducah, Ky., with burial to follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today, and after 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Along with her husband, she is survived by a sister, Mary Walker of Indianapolis and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters and her parents, Charles Carter and Naomi Jean Walker.

“It’s just very sad,” Miles said. “There are some of us around here who knew her who won’t get any closure.”
