Walking tour set for Friday

A historic walking tour of downtown Jeffersonville will take place at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, rain or shine.

Meet at the Overlook at the south end of Spring Street for a tour highlighting the East Riverside Drive neighborhood. Clark County Historian Jeanne Burke will lead the tour, sharing stories about the neighborhood’s history and architectural and historical information about the buildings.

The tour will conclude in time for participants to return to Warder Park to enjoy a Concert in the Park at 7:30 with June Kelley Roy and Top Notch playing standards and swing.

Sponsored by Jeffersonville Main Street, Inc. and the Clark County Museum, Inc., this is the fourth in a series of walking/historical tours taking place this summer and autumn. The final tour of the season is tentatively planned for Sept. 27.

Event to help out children

Those wanting a fun and entertaining way to help build a better learning experience and a better future for at-risk school children are invited to attend a benefit concert featuring Steel of The Night at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 321 E. Market St., Jeffersonville.

Steel of the Night is a Caribbean steel drum band which plays feel-good island songs, a little old rock ‘n’ roll, and Jimmy Buffett and Harry Belafonte favorites. They are featured performers at the Kentucky State Fair. The concert is free and open to all.

Proceeds from the benefit concert will provide funds for Blessings in a Backpack. Those attending will be asked to make a donation in gratitude. Every donation received will be used to provide food for at-risk school aged children. The funds raised will help continue this program at Northaven Elementary School for the 2013-14 school year.

St. Paul’s Church members will host a reception following the concert to honor the performers. For more information, call 812-282-1108.
