Water line broken underneath Market Street in New Albany

Lane closed; breach not expected to result in boil water advisory

NEW ALBANY — A golf ball-sized hole caused a break in a water main underneath Market Street in downtown New Albany on Thursday.

Though water bubbled to the surface and spilled over the roadway, Indiana American Water spokesman Joe Loughmiller said the break wasn’t severe enough to disrupt service.

“They’re able to repair that while the water is still flowing,” he said.

Crews responded after the break was reported at about 12:45 p.m. Loughmiller said a boil-water advisory wouldn’t be issued because of the break in the 4-inch pipe.

The break occurred in the pipe on Market between State and Pearl streets. Crews were still working to repair the line Thursday evening, and one lane of traffic was shut down while work was being conducted.

New Albany Street Department Commissioner Mickey Thompson and Loughmiller didn’t anticipate that the break would result in the closure of that portion of Market Street.

Loughmiller said the cause of the break hadn’t been determined, but added that the line was older and likely constructed during the 1950s. Newer pipes are built of different material than lines from that era, and Loughmiller said it’s not uncommon for older pipes to rupture.
