Preservation Month kicks-off in New Albany

First event is at Second Baptist Church

NEW ALBANY — In the midst of revitalization, New Albany’s Second Baptist Church will serve as the kick-off location for National Preservation Month locally.

From 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 9, a group of presenters will discuss the history of Second Baptist Church, which is also known as Town Clock Church.

The church — located at 300 E. Main St. — served as a connection along the Underground Railroad during the Civil War era. It’s also been targeted for a $400,000 refurbishment project which recently started.

Architects from Michell-Timperman-Ritz will discuss the restoration project, and there will also be a guided tour of the church during the event. The event is free and open to the public.

From 6 to 8:30 p.m. May 14, a Pizza and Preservation Workshop will be held at PC Home Center, located at 123 Cherry St. in New Albany. The session will focus on ways to make historic homes more energy efficient, and will feature Ron Zmyslo, who is a consultant with Preserve Restore Maintain Indiana.

The workshop is also free, but reservations are required by Friday, May 10. To make a reservation, call Indiana Landmarks at 812-284-4534, or e-mail south@indianalandmarks.org.
