Southern Indiana Rehab offering Parkinson’s classes

NEW ALBANY — Parkinson’s disease has devastating effects on the patient and also on the family and caregivers as well.

Southern Indiana Rehab Hospital, 3104 Blackiston Blvd., New Albany, will host a number of community events through the month of April to help both Parkinson’s patients and their caregivers.

SIRH will host a lunch and learn seminar Thursday, April 10, to offer information about community services and available assistance to help caregivers and spouses of people with Parkinson’s disease. The seminar will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the boardroom at SIRH. All participants will receive complimentary lunch and resources materials.

The free event, hosted by the Parkinson’s Support Center of Kentuckiana and SIRH, is designed to give participants a chance to speak with others who are caring for someone with Parkinson’s, meet representatives from local agencies and learn about the support available in the Southern Indiana community, according to a press release.

From 4 to 5:30 p.m. April 15, SIRH will host a kick-off celebration for a new series of exercise classes for patients with Parkinson’s disease. Lee Silverman Voice Treatments’ “Even Bigger” provides innovative and clinically proven methods for improving communication and movement in individuals with Parkinson disease with application to other neurological conditions.

The event — open to past participants and those interested in Parkinson’s disease community classes and education — will be held in the SIRH dining room and will feature free balance screening, refreshments, community resource information and door prizes.

The series of exercise classes will continue at SIRH every Thursday at noon, beginning April 24.

For information or to register for either event, call SIRH at 812-941-6153.
