Soar into service

The Pilot Club of Jeffersonville will host an open house to celebrate 50 years of community service from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at Jeffersonville Firehouse No. 2, Renfroe Drive, and Ind. 62, Jeffersonville.

Refreshments will be served and all past members and Safety Town graduates from the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s are invited to attend.


eReader session at library

Did you get a new eReader during the holidays? Want to read or listen to the library’s downloadable eBooks and audiobooks?

The library will be offering two hands-on sessions — the Android Tablit or Smartphone session will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, and the Nook Tablet session will be at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 27.

You will need a NA-FC, Jeffersonville or Charlestown library card or pin number to access the library’s collection. Space is limited. To register, call 812-949-3523.

Prather School Reunion set

Prather School Friends will gather for their monthly dinner at 4 p.m.

Feb. 20, at Logan’s Roadhouse, 970 E. Lewis and Clark Parkway, Clarksville.


Dance marathon benefits Riley

Floyd Central High School, 6575 Old Vincennes Road, Floyds Knobs, will hold its fourth-annual Dance Marathon to benefit Indianapolis’ Riley Hospital for Children from 2 to 9 p.m. Feb. 22.

The first marathon held at Floyd Central in 2011 raised $17,572.44; last year, that amount grew to $45,003.62. This year’s goal is $47,500.

The first Dance Marathon began in 1991 at Indiana University. Today, there are 37 additional schools holding Dance Marathons to benefit Riley Hospital for Children.

Floyd Central students, who take the role of “dancers,” will remain standing for six hours in honor of the kids at Riley who cannot do so. During the day, they will dance, play games, make crafts and meet Riley kids and their families and hear some amazing stories from the families at the hospital.


Habitat hosting information sessions

The New Albany/Floyd County Habitat for Humanity will be hosting information sessions to qualify families for eligibility to apply to the 2015 Homeownership Program. NA-FC Habitat is a housing ministry that seeks to spread affordable housing among low-income families in Clark and Floyd counties.

Sessions will be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 20 at St. Paul’s Episcopal in Jeffersonville, and 5:30 p.m. Feb. 26 at the New Albany Housing Authority.

Democratic Women’s Caucus set

The Floyd County Democratic Women’s Caucus is conducting a regularly scheduled business meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, at the New Albany Roadhouse Restaurant and Sports Lounge located at 1706 Graybrook Lane, New Albany.

The meeting will include a interactive presentation on “Defending The Affordable Care Act,” followed by an opportunity to meet and greet the Democratic candidates running for elective offices in 2014 as well as meet, socialize and strategize with other Democratic women.

Our Place seeks award nominees

Our Place Drug and Alcohol Education Services Inc. will be hosting the third-annual Jamey Aebersold Spirit of the Red Ribbon Awards Dinner on April 17.

While we celebrate Red Ribbon Week in October each year, the Spirit of the Red Ribbon Awards will acknowledge those who have made a significant contribution toward the education, prevention, intervention and treatment of drug and alcohol abuse in our community year round. The awards are given in honor of Aebersold and his continued commitment in this area.

If chosen for this award, recipients will be honored by their peers and friends at a dinner and ceremony at the Calumet Club in New Albany.

Award categories are: Education, Faith Based, Community, Industry/Business, Justice/Law Enforcement, Health Services, Social Services and Youth.

The Clark County Tea Party invites the public to the group’s weekly meeting from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, at Silver Creek Middle School, 495 N. Indiana Ave., Sellersburg.

Author, ghost hunters to talk

Local author C.C. Thomas, along with members of the Southern Indiana Ghost Hunters Society, will meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Sellersburg Public Library.

Thomas will discuss her book “Southern Indiana Ghost Hunters Chronicles,” which highlights her experiences with the local ghost hunting group.
