Southern Indiana officials prepare for Thunder Over Louisville traffic, crowds

Clarksville, Jeffersonville map out road closures; Clark Memorial Bridge to close Thursday

JEFFERSONVILLE — The Clark Memorial Bridge will close Thursday in preparation for Thunder Over Louisville, according to a news release from the Kentucky Derby Festival. The fireworks extravaganza has led officials to announce a slew of road closures, including the city of Jeffersonville, the town of Clarksville and the Louisville Metropolitan Police Department. Details are below.


• Thursday, April 10: 9:30 a.m. The bridge will remain closed around the clock until 2 p.m. Sunday, April 13.


From 9:30 a.m. Thursday until 11 a.m. Saturday, pedestrian and bicycle commuters needing to cross the Clark Memorial Bridge may do so using a free shuttle van operated, as needed, by the Kentucky Derby Festival. To request a van ride, speak with a security officer at either end of the Clark Memorial Bridge. The bridge will be completely closed — and no shuttle will operate — from 11 a.m. Saturday, April 12, at until 2:30 a.m. Sunday, April 13.


The following routes in Jeffersonville will be closed Saturday, the day of Thunder Over Louisville:

• Riverside Drive from JeffBoat west to Clarksville;

• Market Street from Pearl Street west to Clarksville;

• Missouri Avenue from Market Street north to South Clark Boulevard;

• Southern Indiana Avenue;

• River Pointe Plaza, North Shore, Clark Street and Fort Street;

• The 100 block of Spring, Wall, Locust, Pearl and Walnut streets;

• Mulberry Street from Maple Street south to Pearl Street;

• Chestnut Street from Mulberry Street to Pearl Street;

• West Court Avenue at Ohio Avenue;

• All alleys along the flood wall from JeffBoat west to the city limits.  


Jeffersonville residents who need to get their vehicles into the area after 8 a.m. Saturday will need to enter at one of six police road blocks. They are located at:

• Market Street at Pearl Street;

• The 100 block of Pearl Street;

• Market Street at Locust Street;

• Market Street at Spring Street;

• Market Street at Wall Street;

• Market Street at Walnut Street.

Drivers must provide proof of residency to gain access to the blocked-off areas. A drivers license with current address, a recent utility bill or vehicle registration will suffice.

All vehicles must be parked on private property. Unauthorized vehicles will be cited and towed at the owner’s expense.


Friday (11 a.m. until the conclusion of Thunder on Saturday)

• Riverside Drive at Woerner Avenue

South Sherwood at Winbourne Avenue

• Smyser Avenue at the flood wall

Tents or any other pop-up structures will not be allowed in the event area.


The following roads will be closed at 6 a.m.:

• South Clark at Winbourne

• South Clark at Beckett

• South Clark at Sherwood

• Montgomery at Virginia

• Montgomery at Sherwood

• Riverside at Woerner

• Marriott at Montgomery (to Ninth Street)

• Harrison at Bailey

• Winbourne at Riverside

• Emery Crossing at Summerplace

• South Sherwood at Riverside (flood wall)

The following roads will be closed at 10 a.m.:

• South Clark at Woerner (residents and businesses only — permit required)

The following roads will be closed at 2 p.m.:

• South Clark at Montgomery (residents, entry to VIP area, church, handicapped only — permit required)

The following roads will be closed at 4 p.m.:

• Smyser at the flood wall

The following roads will be closed when necessary:

• North Clark at Brown Station Way

• Lewis and Clark Parkway at Brown Station Way

• Emery Crossing at McCollough Pike

• Bingham Way west from Witherspoon Street (Joe’s Crab Shack) to River Road

1 p.m. Friday, April 11 to  9 a.m. Sunday, April 13

• Witherspoon Street from Preston Street to Brook Street

• Floyd and Washington North closed — only open to residents

• River Road from Preston Street to Witherspoon Street

8 p.m. Friday, April 11 to 9 a.m. Sunday, April 13

• Ramp from westbound Interstate 64 to Third Street (exit south onto Third Street only until ramp closure — River Road will be closed on Friday, April 11, at 10 a.m.)

• Ramp from Second Street to eastbound I-64

8 a.m. Saturday, April 12 to 1 a.m. Sunday, April 13

• Second Street north from Main Street

9 a.m. Saturday, April 12 to 1 a.m. Sunday, April 13

(Local traffic and pass traffic will be allowed provided there are no pedestrian safety issues. Residents and businesses within the closure area will need to contact LMPD for passes.)

• River Road from Witherspoon Street to Preston Street

• Frankfort Avenue from River Road to Story Avenue (local and Vehicle Impoundment Lot traffic only)

• Witherspoon Street from Brook Street to Second Street

• Witherspoon Street from Preston Street to Adams Street

• Washington Street from First Street to Second Street

• Preston Street from Washington Street to Witherspoon Street

• Floyd Street from Washington Street to Witherspoon Street

• Brook Street from Washington Street to Witherspoon Street

• First Street from Washington Street to Witherspoon Street

• Second Street from Main Street to River Road

• Third Street from Main Street to River Road (access will be allowed to parking garages)

6 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12

• Ramp from Muhammad Ali Boulevard to Interstate 65 northbound

8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12

• I-65 northbound from Interstate 264 (Watterson Expressway) to I-64

• I-65 southbound from I-265 (Indiana) to I-64

• I-64 westbound from I-264 (Watterson Expressway) to 22nd Street

• I-64 eastbound from I-264 (Shawnee Expressway) to I-65

• Interstate 71 southbound from I-264 (Watterson Expressway) to I-65
