Man charged in battery of Floyd jail staff

Police: New Albany man spits on jailer during book-in

FLOYD COUNTY — After a 20-year-old New Albany man was arrested on two preliminary misdemeanor charges by Indiana State Police early Thursday morning, he picked up two additional charges while be transported and booked into jail.

Evan M. Coombs, of 4221 Lora Linda, was taken into custody about 3:30 a.m. following a traffic stop made by ISP. According to a probable-cause affidavit, Coombs was one of the passengers in the vehicle, and he was preliminarily charged with possession of a false identification and minor consumption.

The report lists Coombs returned a .20 blood alcohol content reading, more than twice the legal limit for motorists of legal drinking age, during a sobriety test.

As the trooper was taking Coombs to Floyd County Jail on the two charges, he attempted to exit the moving vehicle. The trooper reported that Coombs unbuckled his seat belt with his left hand and grabbed the door handle of the patrol car. The trooper stopped the vehicle near the intersection of Spring and State streets in New Albany and had Coombs exit the vehicle so he could reinforce the restraints.

During the process outside the patrol car, Coombs continued to resist arrest and had to be taken to the ground, the trooper reported. The trooper waited for backup officers to arrive, and Coombs was placed in leg restraints and taken to the jail.

At the jail, Coombs would not follow basic instructions of the jail staff, the trooper reported. As he was being booked into the jail, Coombs stated that he was suicidal, according to the affidavit.

After being placed into a cell, Coombs continued to resist jail staff and spit on the shirt of a corrections officer.

During Coombs’ initial hearing in Floyd County Superior Court No. 3, he was charged with battery by body waste, resisting law enforcement and false government identification, all class A misdemeanors, and illegal consumption of an alcoholic beverage, a class C misdemeanor.

Floyd County Judge Maria Granger placed Coombs under a $5,000 court-cash bond. A pretrial conference was scheduled for Jan. 23.
