Holiday Festival set for Saturday in New Albany

Santa to light Pearl and Spring streets at 6 p.m.

Downtown New Albany welcomes the Christmas season Saturday with a range of events from a chili cook-off to carriage rides.

The New Albany Holiday Festival is sponsored by Develop New Albany in conjunction with the city and downtown merchants. It will run from 2 to 7 p.m. with live music starting the celebration on a stage at the corner of Spring and Pearl streets, which will last until 6 p.m.

Scribner House, Carnegie Center for Art and History and the Floyd County Historical Society’s Padgett Museum will offer free tours.

People can also take a holiday tour of Culbertson Mansion for $1, and there will be carriage rides available for a circle of downtown.

There will be a chili cook-off beginning at 2 p.m. at the MainSource Bank parking lot along State Street. People can stop by to sample the chili and vote for a winner.

Santa probably won’t be working-out at the Floyd County branch of YMCA of Southern Indiana, but he will be there for pictures from 3 to 5 p.m. Cookies and drinks will be served at the Y during Santa’s stay.

Santa will flip the switch to light Pearl and Spring streets at 6 p.m.

Santa’s Mall will feature local artists and businesses selling unique Christmas gifts from 2 to 7 p.m. It will be located in the former Treasure Mine Mall building along Spring Street.

Kids can receive free gifts at Santa’s Mall and also take part in craft projects sponsored by MainSource Bank.

Additionally, Christmas trees will be sold at the downtown Farmers Market location.

Stefanie Griffith chaired a committee that oversaw planning of the event for Develop New Albany. She said there will be something for everyone in the family to enjoy at the festival.

“I think we will have a good flow of people throughout downtown,” said Griffith, who owns Strandz & Threadz located along Vincennes Street.
