New Albany Gateway project finished

Spring Street Hill Road to close for tour

NEW ALBANY —

The project to beautify the Spring Street gateway into New Albany is “essentially complete”, an engineer hired by the city said Tuesday.

During the New Albany Board of Public Works and Safety meeting, Wes Christmas of  the engineering firm Clark-Dietz said all traffic lanes re-opened Friday.

Officials had targeted having the project completed by this weekend. The $200,000-plus effort included the extension of curbs and new medians, and a new sign will likely be added as well.

ROAD CLOSED FOR TOUR

The board of works approved the closure of Spring Street Hill Road from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 18 for the self-guided “Scenic Railway” tour.

The event allows people to walk a portion of the former Silver Hills railway line that was constructed 122 years ago.

In conjunction with the tour, the board also agreed to close Highland Avenue from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. that day for the installation of a historical marker honoring the railway line.

The tour is free and open to the public, and will begin at the bottom of Spring Street Hill.

THE EXCHANGE OK’D FOR OUTDOOR SEATING

Outdoor seating for The Exchange pub + kitchen was approved by the board.

Ian Hall, president of BRAND Hospitality Group which owns the 118 W. Main St. location, said the restaurant will likely feature five or six outdoor tables during the spring and summer months.

He said the option to include outdoor seating was included in the plan submitted to the state for alcohol licensing before the restaurant opened.
