New Albany Farmers Market opens Saturday

50 vendors expected by June

NEW ALBANY —

Produce, art and sweets — there will be plenty of treats and treasures for sale Saturday as the downtown New Albany Farmers Market opens for the year.

Sponsored by Develop New Albany, the market is located in a pavilion at the corner of Bank and Market streets.

Market organizer Susan Kaempfer said several vendors have already signed up for the event.

“The biggest change you’re going to see this year is we’re going to be pretty full right from the start,” Kaempfer said.

She anticipates 25 to 30 vendors will have booths on Saturday, which is up by more than 10 from last year.

“I’m really excited about the number of folks that are returning, and we have some interesting new people coming this year,” Kaempfer said.

“By the time we hit our stride the first part of June, we’ll probably have 50 vendors signed up for the market.”

She said 47 applications have already been received, and she knows of at least 10 more that are in the mail.

Some of the vendors will only be able to setup a booth for one or two Saturdays a month, but Kaempfer said that won’t be a problem.

“I’m thrilled that we’ve got so many awesome people coming right off the bat,” she said.

The downtown Farmers Market will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. until Oct. 26. Beginning June 18, a Farmers Market will be setup in the Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services parking lot from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Tuesday through Sept. 24.

And beginning on June 19, the downtown Farmers Market will be open from 4 to 7 p.m. each Wednesday evening.

With a somewhat normal spring this year in terms of the weather, Kaempfer said farmers have told her they have plenty of produce ready to sell at the markets.

There will be a few new editions this year including some bakers and “boutique farmers” who specialize in growing a specific vegetable.
