NEW ALBANY

Carnegie hosting Lunch & Learn

From noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, at the Carnegie Center for Art and History in New Albany, historian Pen Bogert will present the program “Celebrating Emancipation in New Albany and Louisville,” as part of the Lunch & Learn series. 

“The great mission of the 19th century approaches its fruition.” These words, spoken by Charles D. Drake at the Freedom Convention in 1864, describe the hope of a community that had long been enslaved. In 1865, the 13th Amendment was ratified, making slavery illegal in the United States. Bogert will present the historical background of emancipation celebrations in Louisville and Southern Indiana and explain the differences and similarities in how the communities celebrated emancipation.  

Participants can bring a lunch, drinks are provided. This program is free, but registration is required by calling 812-944-7336 or email dthomas@ carnegiecenter.org

 

JEFFERSONVILLE

Parks board switches meeting time

Jeffersonville’s Parks Authority Board has changed the date of its previously scheduled meeting May 27 to Monday, May 20, due to the Memorial Day holiday.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m., May 20, in the city council’s chamber in Jeffersonville City Hall, 500 Quartermaster Court in Jeffersonville.

Hosparus offering volunteer training

Hosparus Southern Indiana needs patient care volunteers who live in Clark, Crawford, Floyd, Harrison, Scott and Washington counties. Hosparus will offer free volunteer training, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday, May 20 (lunch provided) at its New Albany office, 624 E.
