Busy Saturday for New Albany happenings

Arts Council holding two receptions, businesses offering specials and events

NEW ALBANY — Beyond the New Albany Public Art Project walk, there are several events planned in the city Saturday.

The Arts Council of Southern Indiana is hosting two events, the first of which is a reception for the Beyond Borders project which started in June.

The project focuses on Butterflies and their “symbol of transformation in many cultures, and in art and literature” according to the Arts Council. The organization paired with Sunnyside Master Gardeners to turn a corner of the Arts Council’s 820 E. Market St. property into what will be titled the Monarch Way Station.

The reception will be from noon to 5 p.m. at the Arts Council headquarters, where participants can help carve a butterfly keystone that will be displayed in the Way Station Garden.

Several artists will be on hand for the event, and there will be activities for children.

From 6 to 9 p.m., there will be an opening celebration for the “ArtsWORK” exhibit which will be located in the Arts Council’s new Resch Gallery at 138 E. Spring St. in the historic United Gas and Electric Building.

The exhibit features works from artists Billy Hertz, Melissa Wilson, Susan Gorsen, Lisa Austin, Albertus Gorman, C.J. Pressma, Greg Acker and Karen Davis.

The opening reception coincides with the Bicentennial Steamboat exhibit, which is on display throughout July and is also located in the United Gas and Electric Building.

The following downtown businesses and organizations are also hosting special events or sales Saturday: The Vintage Fire Museum, The Gallery on Pearl, Thorpe Woodworks, The Dandy Lion, Creative Boutique, Colokial, Preston Arts Center, Schmitt Furniture and the New Albany Farmers’ Market.
