Gibson sentenced to death

Convicted murderer given 2014 execution date

NEW ALBANY — William Clyde Gibson was sentenced to lethal injection Tuesday morning in a Floyd County court.

Presiding Judge Susan Orth told Gibson, 56, New Albany, in open court that he will be executed in one year, on Nov. 26, 2014.

Before the sentencing date was delivered, Orth allowed Gibson the opportunity to address the court.

“I know my attorneys really don't want me to say anything, but I would like to have a fast and speedy trial for the next two trials,” Gibson said. “It ain’t no big deal to me. That’s just how it is. I don’t want no deal. I want a trial.”

The sentencing hearing followed a guilty verdict reached last month for the killing of Christine Whitis, 75, a woman Gibson had known all his life.

Gibson currently has charges pending in the murders of Stephanie Kirk, 35, Charlestown — who was found buried in Gibson’s backyard nearly a week after Whitis’ remains were discovered in his home's garage in April 2012 — and Karen Hodella, 45, whose body was found in the Ohio River in 2003.

Floyd County Prosecutor Keith Henderson has said he will again seek the death penalty during the Kirk trial.

Both trials are expected to be completed in 2014, but the appellate processes, in at least the two capital cases, are expected to continue for several years.

This story will be updated.
