Students to sing at Gospel Celebration

Two of Southern Indiana’s top choral programs will present traditional and original gospel works in a concert featuring composer and guest clinician Roosevelt Escalante Jr.

Escalante, Morehead State University’s assistant director of choral activities, will join Jeffersonville’s Chamber Singers and New Albany High School Acappella Singers and Camerata Singers for New Albany’s 13th annual Gospel Music Celebration at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17.

New Albany’s Acappella Singers and Camerata Singers will be joined by Jeffersonville’s Chamber Singers, to comprise the 140 singers presenting a program including six of Escalante’s original gospel compositions.

The 2012 Gospel Music Celebration will be in the New Albany High School Auditorium, 1020 Vincennes St. Tickets are $5 and are available at the door the evening of the performance.

JEFFERSONVILLE

Festival set for Saturday

The Sugar Maples Festival will return to downtown Jeffersonville from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13. The festival is in the 100 block of West Maple Street.

The event has the feeling of a small town street festival while offering those who attend live entertainment, food offerings and shopping opportunities. More than 20 booths are set up in the block which is cordoned off to facilitate foot traffic.

Sorority holding yard sale

Delta Phi Chapter of Sigma Phi Gamma Sorority will sponsor a yard sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 13, under the carport at 38 Center St., Jeffersonville.

Delta Phi Chapter supports the Bliss House, Clark County Chapter of the American Red Cross and gives a scholarship each year to a JHS college bound senior.

FLOYD COUNTY

Carnegie event at Harvest tent

From noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, participants at the Carnegie Center Family Fun Workshop will be painting their own real miniature pumpkins to take home. No preregistration is necessary. Many other organizations will have activities in the Kids’ Tent as well. Admission to the Kids’ Tent, located next to the New Albany Amphitheater on the riverfront, is free.
