New Albany hires parks director

City’s pick managed events and facilities for Ole Miss

NEW ALBANY — New Albany has a new parks director.

Mayor Jeff Gahan announced Thursday afternoon that Alicia Meredith will lead the parks department. Meredith has a diverse background in events planning and Gahan said she is ready to lead the department and help it grow.

“Alicia’s background in managing and operating facilities and coordinating major events will be a great asset as the city of New Albany’s parks department moves forward and continues to expand and improve its operation,” Gahan said in a press release.

Since the city voted to split the joint parks department with Floyd County, which began Jan. 1, longtime parks employee Kathy Wilkerson has served as interim director. Wilkerson will now become the assistant director and recreation director.

“City parks have experienced many positive changes since January. Working together with Alicia, we will develop more public leisure opportunities for every family in our community,” Wilkerson said in the release.

Meredith is a 2006 graduate of The Ohio State University, with a bachelor’s degree in criminal and behavioral sciences. She went on to receive her master’s degree in sports administration from the University of Louisville in 2008.

After receiving her master’s, Meredith became the assistant facilities and events coordinator at California State University Bakersfield. She went on to become the event management coordinator for the University of Mississippi.

Her duties at Ole Miss included managing the event and facility operations for more than 13 different sports. She also served as school tournament director for all SEC conference tournaments and all NCAA regional tournaments, and she was instrumental in implementing new policies and procedures for daily usage of the school’s facilities. She oversaw a budget of approximately $1.5 million and managed event staffs of more than 40.

“We are very excited about having a new director,” said Parks Board President Steve Sipes in the release. “We believe that she is very talented and is going to do an exceptional job for us.”
