Resident raises concerns about sidewalk conditions in New Albany

Man calls stretch of East 18th Street one of the worst in city

NEW ALBANY — Sandwiched between East Main Street and the Ohio River, New Albany resident Bill Cash said a stretch of roadway needs sidewalks and other improvements.

Cash told city officials last week that East 18th Street between Dewey Street and Troy Street has “probably the worst sidewalks in the city of New Albany.”

There’s a small church in the neighborhood and older residents utilize what’s left of the sidewalks regularly. Some portions of the pavement have deteriorated into little more than dirt and grass.

New Albany Street Commissioner Mickey Thompson said he would examine the area, but added that if the problem with the sidewalks is more than just an isolated section, the city would have to hire a contractor to fix the paths.

With the city undertaking a $2.3 million improvement project to East Main Street, Cash said other areas should also be considered for upgrades.

“If you could do a whole street of Main Street, can’t you do one block of 18th Street,” he asked.

That area of the city is often overlooked, and it appears officials aren’t overly concerned with improving the conditions of the neighborhood, Cash continued.

Warren Nash, president of the New Albany Board of Public Works and Safety, said the city has the opposite aim.

“That’s our goal. To not have blighted areas,” he said.

Thompson is expected to report back to the board of public works this month about the condition of the sidewalks.
