Revelers and runners to come together Tuesday

Leprechaun Run to cover 2 miles, feature green beer in Jeffersonville

JEFFERSONVILLE — It’s coming a bit earlier than the actual St. Patrick’s Day holiday, but runners and drinkers will be celebrating Tuesday, March 11, in Jeffersonville.

The annual Leprechaun Run is only in its sixth year, but it has already become a hit to local running enthusiasts, or those looking to have a good time. The two-mile race begins at Watt and Chestnut streets, goes east to Main Street and back to the start line. The race begins at 6:30 p.m.

After the run, the fun really kicks up with a reception/party at 300 Spring in Jeffersonville, which will also be the place for race day registration beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Each participant is entitled to one green beer or soft drink after the race. There will also be door prizes and pizza at a small cost. The doors at 300 Spring close at 8 p.m.

“Some people want to get some speed work in while for others two miles is a safe distance. A lot of people are just starting to get into their fitness program and may not be ready for a long distance, but can handle two miles,” said race organizer Fred Geswein. “I have tried to appeal to both.”

Geswein said a 5k — or 3.1 miles — is usually the shortest race offered to runners, which makes the Leprechaun Run unique. He said walkers are also invited to participate.

“I don’t know of anything less than 5k,” he said. “It’s great speed work, and good experience for the beginning runner.”

Geswein said previous runs have attracted around 200 runners. He said he has never had more than 215 participants.

“A lot of people put on costumes and really seem to enjoy it,” Geswein said. “The weather is supposed to be nice and people are tired of all the cold weather we have had. It’s a perfect opportunity to get out, run two miles and have some fun.”

Race-day registration is $25. Registration will take place at 300 Spring on race day until 6:10 p.m. For more information, email fastfred@fredrun.com.

Awards will be given to the top three overall male and female finishers. A limited number of Leprechaun Run tech shirts will be available race day for $15.

Proceeds benefit the Purdue University School of Pharmacy Type 1 Diabetes Education for Clark, Floyd and Harrison counties, and RiverStage.
