Public input needed for Floyd County parks master plan

Meeting planned for Thursday at Highland Hill

FLOYD COUNTY — Now is your chance to be heard.

The Floyd County Parks and Recreation Department will hold a pair of public meetings to gather input for the new five-year master plan which is currently being written. Meetings are planned for 6 p.m. Thursday at Highland Hills Middle School, 3492 Edwardsville Galena Road, Georgetown, and 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, at Pine View Government Center, 2524 Corydon Pike, New Albany.

There are two components to the master plan according to Don Lopp, planner and director of county operations. The first deals with programing and the second potential capital projects.

Lopp said 500 mailers were also mailed out to residents seeking input and 136 online responses have already been received. He said it’s important for the public to tell officials what they would like to see in the county parks system — more adult or youth leagues, hiking trails or senior programming.

The last master plan that expires soon is where officials saw the need for a new Little League complex and green space in the eastern corridor of the county. The county parks department recently closed on 30 acres near Northside Christian Church along Charlestown Road where a Little League complex and park are planned.

Parks departments have to submit a master plan in order to be eligible for federal funding.

“So far we have received some really good comments,” Lopp said.

The plan is expected to be completed in November.
