NEWS AND TRIBUNE
The staff of the News and Tribune won eight awards at the annual Hoosier State Press Association Better Newspaper contest last weekend.
The staff won a first place for best ongoing news coverage for stories about the March 2 tornadoes in Clark County. Also winning firsts were Staff Writer Matt Koesters for best sports event coverage — Providence’s state soccer title — and Staff Photographer Christopher Fryer for his photo series on the Gilles family’s recovery from the Henryville tornado. Fryer also took third in that same category — best multiple picture group. Fryer also took a third place for best sports feature photo.
Also winning awards Saturday were:
• Braden Lammers, staff writer — second place, best ongoing news coverage.
• Shea Van Hoy, editor — second place, best editorial writer.
• Elizabeth Goodman, page designer — third place, best use of graphics.
• Michael Reschke, former copy editor — third place, best sports news or feature coverage.
“The awards are very competitive,” said Van Hoy. “This year, nearly 80 newspapers submitted more than 2,600 entries into the contest. I’m proud of the great work of the staff and the recognition from peer judges.”
Earlier this year, the News and Tribune won the newspaper of the year for smaller dailies for the second year in a row from the newspaper’s parent company, Community News Holdings Inc.
