Clark Memorial Bridge lanes to close starting Monday

Painting and sidewalk repairs will take place

JEFFERSONVILLE — The third span in less than two years connecting Indiana to Kentucky over the Ohio River is set to undergo repairs.

Traffic delays are again expected to affect commuters as the Clark Memorial Bridge is slated for construction starting Monday.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet awarded a contract last fall for improvements to the Clark Memorial Bridge, including painting and sidewalk repairs on the Indiana approach, according to a press release. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction 24 hours-a-day while crews paint the steel, replace handrails and sidewalks and repair bridge expansion joints on the Indiana approach.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Spokeswoman Andrea Clifford said in an email traffic will be limited to one side of the bridge for 30 days and then switch to the other side for 30 days.

The first section of work is scheduled to begin on Monday, Jan. 14, and the southbound lanes will be closed first. The lane closures will begin at 7:30 a.m. and there will be one lane of traffic in each direction utilizing the northbound lanes, she said.

Crews will not be working on the entire bridge deck, as that work was completed about 10 years ago, Clifford said in an email. All of the work is needed maintenance, she added.

“The maintenance, repairs and painting should last about 20 years [and] the bridge is inspected every two years,” she said.

About 15,000 vehicles cross this bridge each day and during construction the speed limit in the work zone will be reduced to 25 mph for the duration of the project, according to the release. The project will be signed as a double fine work zone.

Hall Contracting of Louisville was awarded the contract for the project which totals $1.07 million. Construction is scheduled for completion by April 15.

Work on the local span across the Ohio River follows repairs and redecking of the Interstate 65 Kennedy Bridge that took place over the summer and repairs made to the I-64 Sherman Minton Bridge that began in 2011 when a crack was discovered in one of the joints on the bridge.

In August, lane closures shut down all three bridges as Kentucky Transportation Cabinet officials and Indiana Department of Transportation officials conducted joint walk-through inspections.
