H.S. BOYS' TENNIS: Pioneers take New Albany Invitational title

Carrico, Quinkert win individual titles for sizzling Providence

NEW ALBANY — Following last week’s impressive 5-0 boys’ tennis victory at Silver Creek, Providence won at three of five spots to take the New Albany Invitational championship on Saturday.

The Pioneers had a finalist in four of the five divisions, including champions at No. 2 singles in Jacob Quinkert, No. 3 singles with Landon Carrico and the No. 2 doubles team of Patrick McPhillips and Nolan Carrico.

“I'm very proud of our performance this weekend,” Providence coach Scott Gurgol said. “Our team is well rounded and these boys enter matches believing they can win all five positions. It is a pressure reliever for the boys because if one person has a bad day the team knows they can pick that guy up.”

Two of the Pioneers’ championship victories came against runner-up New Albany. Landon Carrico defeated Bulldog freshman Nathan Johnson at No. 3 singles — 6-2, 6-1 — and McPhillips and Nolan Carrico topped Zach Daniel and Nick White 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.

“It’s one of the best Providence teams in a long time,” New Albany coach Bob Dusch said. “They have a lot more depth than they’ve had.”

New Albany’s No. 1 doubles team of Tanner Goller and Jake Kennard also took the title with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Providence’s Ben Arnson and Ryan Day. Freshman No. 1 singles player Logan Charbonneau finished third after a loss to Scottsburg exchange student Andrej Halasa.

“There were together last year at [No.] 2 doubles,” Dusch said of Goller and Kennard. “They were up to the call. I was pleased. They worked well together.”

New Albany and Providence meet head-to-head on Friday.

“I’m looking forward to playing them straight up,” Dusch said.

Eastern’s Alex Doebler went 2-1 and fell to Halasa in the No. 1 singles championship match. Charlestown’s top finishers were Kyle Jackson at No. 2 singles and Tyler Massie at No. 3 singles. Both placed fifth.
