HHC ROUNDUP: Highlanders take HHC tennis crown again

Bulldogs fall, Highlanders win in baseball tournament

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — For the eighth straight year, the Floyd Central Highlanders have claimed the Hoosier Hill Conference championship. The Highlanders beat Columbus East 3-2 in the final match of the tournament giving the Floyd Central its 19th title in the program’s history.

“This is a wonderful achievement for the program,” said Highlander coach Rick Miller, who collected his 13th title in 19 years as Floyd’s girls coach.

“Its not just me,” said Miller. “You can’t win the Kentucky Derby with mules. I got good athletes and great parents who support me. You can have a program, but you have to have the support. That is what makes it special.”

Floyd’s Giorgia Rosetto took No. 1 singles and the Highlanders’ No. 1 doubles team of Erin Patterson and Alex Jamison won early, but after losses in No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles, the championship came down to No. 3 singles. Alexis Applegate defeated Alexa Husmann-Miller 6-2, 6-3 to give Floyd the title.

“We knew they were a good team,” Miller said of the Olympians. “They have had some good wins. We have been watching them and we knew their girls from last year.” We are still looking for answers ourselves. Alexis Applegate was last on court for the title. She won the first set and was up 4-3 in second set. She closed it out fast and got off the court. Everyone was ecstatic.”

The win puts last year’s state runner-up at 14-4 on the year and allows the Highlanders to check off one of their season goals.

“This was on of our goals. Next is the state championship,” Miller said. “We want to play in the Final 8 again. We want a shot at it all. Our girls are motivated. We have been there three times out of the last five years and we would like to do it one more time.”

The Highlanders’ next match will come next Wednesday in the Floyd Central Sectional Tournament. Their opponent will be named Monday.
