TERRE HAUTE —
After a 6-5 loss to Terre Haute in Saturday’s winners’ bracket final, Floyds Knobs Post 42 got eliminated by Terre Haute from the Terre Haute American Legion Regional with a 10-inning, 10-9 loss in Sunday afternoon’s championship game.
State-power Terre Haute advances to the state tournament in St. Leon.
“It’s a tough pill to swallow knowing that we were right there both times against them this weekend,” Post 42 manager Ricky Romans said. “Like with any game, if a few plays go our way or we get a big stop or a big hit, it’s a different outcome. But that’s baseball. I’m extremely proud of our guys, not just this weekend, but throughout the whole season.”
Floyds Knobs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when North Harrison graduate Collin Book singled home his former high school teammate Josh Wenning.
After Terre Haute tied it at 1-1 in the third, Post 42 took its second lead in the fourth as Floyd Central grad Cody Sunderhaus drove home Charlestown junior Ryan Jones, who had singled and stole second base.
Terre Haute appeared to have taken control with six runs in the fourth, but Floyds Knobs took a 9-7 lead with a seven-spot in the sixth. Sunderhaus, Wenning, Derek DeSpain, Book each had RBIs before recent Henryville grad Cody Reister hit a three-run home run for a 9-7 Post 42 lead.
However, Terre Haute scored twice in the eighth to send it to extra innings before winning it in the 10th.
Jones finished 3-for-5 and scored twice for Floyds Knobs. Book also had three hits for Post 42.
“[The Floyds Knobs players] worked extremely hard and they have bought in to our desire to make this one of the top Legion programs in the state,” Romans said. “Because of their commitment and efforts, there is no doubt that we are moving in the right direction. For these kids to come in from all different schools and to bond as quickly as they did, that’s just a great testament to them and their desire to work together towards a common goal. I appreciate all of the hard work that the players and coaching staff gave this year.”
