Highlanders have no answer for No. 2 Stars in 65-39 loss

(Continued)

NORTH VERNON — BEDFORD NORTH LAWRENCE 65, FLOYD CENTRAL 39

The Stars grabbed control of the game at the outset.

Bedford nailed four 3-pointers to go up 12-1 in the first five minutes of the contest. Senior guard Sammy Dillman and Brittani Rizzi each made two 3s during the opening run.

“We knew they were going to make runs like that. They’ve done that all year,” Floyd Central coach Kirk Hamsley said.

Bedford was up 30-12 at halftime over the Highlanders (9-11) and got its advantage to as high as 30 points at 56-26 early in the fourth quarter.

The Highlanders’ 39 points matched their season-low. They shot 13-of-36 from the field (36.1 percent).

“Defensively, we did a great job. But offensively, we struggled to score,” Hamsley said. “The game was physical early and we didn’t adjust to it, especially getting the ball where we wanted to.”

Junior forward Madison Kaiser was the only Floyd Central player to score in double figures with 17 points as she was 7-of-15 from the floor. Highlander senior Abbie Engle had nine points. Both players grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.

Six-foot-3 junior center Jenna Allen led Bedford with 21 points on 10-of-14 shooting. Allen also shared game-high honors for blocked shots with teammate Dominique McBryde with four apiece.

Rizzi tallied 12 points. Stars’ junior guard Alexa Bailey, the daughter of Bedford coach and former Indiana Mr. Basketball Damon Bailey, registered 10 points, a game-high six assists and a game-high four steals.

Floyd Central loses four seniors in Engle, Shelby Rost, Brooke Hinton and standout player Riley Kaiser.
