NEW ALBANY —
The IU Southeast softball team set a new program record by winning its 14th consecutive game as the Grenadiers swept St. Catharine on Thursday afternoon.
IU Southeast needed late-game heroics to tie the record in the first game of the day. After St. Catharine scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning, IU Southeast stormed back to grab the win.
Jade Detzer tripled to score Amber Eckstein and Megan Sutherland reached via a throwing error by the third baseman Brittany McKee and came around to score to tie the game at 11. Brookelyn Visker reached on a dropped third strike and that set the stage for Whitney Estes, who hit her second home run of the day — and her fifth of the season — to centerfield to win it and push the IU Southeast’s winning streak to 13 games.
Estes reached base all five times in Game 1 with two home runs, a double and a single.
Amber Eckstein got the win in relief of Bethany Sullivan to move her record to 4-1.
In Game 2, Katie Jelinek hit a three-run home run to open the scoring in the bottom of the first for IU Southeast. That was Jelinek’s second home run of the day and her third on the year. The Grenadiers would score four more times in support of Jenna Swain for a 7-0 win and the new record.
Two Grenadier squads (2009, 2011) had 13-game winning streaks.
Swain (3-2) got her second shutout in as many games for the Grenadiers in six innings of work.
IU Southeast returns to KIAC play when it heads to Alice Lloyd on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
