H.S. ROUNDUP: Bulldogs fall to Avon, 9-3

Dragons, Red Devils each prevail on Thursday


NEW ALBANY — The New Albany baseball team suffered its first loss of the season on Thursday at Mount Tabor Field, falling to Avon 9-3.

The Bulldogs collected only three hits, which were singles by Tucker Marcum, Garrett Sherrell and Shane Robison.

Robison suffered the loss on the mound, evening his record at 1-1. The Orioles’ big inning was the second, as they plated six runs on six hits.

“Avon has an outstanding team. We were just a little outmanned tonight,” New Albany coach Chris McIntyre said. “It is good for our guys to see that type of competition. Avon starts five seniors who have signed to play college baseball next year, and their junior shortstop has committed to Indiana.”

NEXT: New Albany (2-1) hosts Tri County, Mich., today.

• Meyer pitches Jeff past Jennings: Senior pitcher Mark Meyer yielded two runs on two hits in a complete-game effort, as host Jeffersonville beat Jennings County on Thursday, 9-2. Meyer had seven strikeouts.

Jeff senior catcher Isaac Crafton was out of the lineup because of an arm injury.

• Dragons down Generals: Silver Creek pitcher Lucas Barnett yielded two runs (one earned) on two hits with 10 strikeouts in the Dragons’ 5-2 victory on Thursday at Clarksville. Braydon Ware went 2-for-3 for Silver Creek.

NEXT: Silver Creek (5-1, 1-0 Mid-Southern Conference) hosts Southwestern, today; Clarksville (1-3, 0-1) at Borden (DH), Saturday.


• Highlanders stay undefeated: Kassie King gave up one run on four hits in a complete-game effort, leading host Floyd Central past Columbus East on Thursday 7-1. King struck out eight and walked one.

The Highlanders’ Taylor McClure, Regan Hadley and Kaitlin Dreher each went 3-for-4.

• Dragons defeat Seymour: McKenzie Bush went 3-for-4 and was the winning pitcher in host Silver Creek’s 10-6 win over Seymour on Thursday. Going 2-for-4 for the Dragons were Brooke Barnett, Sydney Ledwedge and Lexy Kiper.

NEXT: Silver Creek (3-1) at Southwestern, today.

• Generals win MSC opener: Eight Clarksville players each got one hit in their 5-3 win on Thursday in their MSC opener at North Harrison. Generals’ pitcher Bailey Sharp yielded three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

NEXT: Clarksville (2-0, 1-0 MSC) hosts Floyd Central, today.


• Jasper sweeps Red Devils: Jeffersonville got swept at Jasper on Thursday, 5-0. Only one match went three sets, as the Red Devils’ No. 1 doubles team of Julianna Jenks and Emily Lewis lost 1-6, 6-0, 6-1.

NEXT: Jeff (1-1) at Providence (Community Park), Monday.

• Mustangs lose season opener: Host New Washington fell in its season opener to Lanesville on Thursday, 4-1. Junior Ashley Johnson collected the Mustangs’ lone point, winning at No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-2.

NEXT: New Washington (0-1, 0-1 Southern Athletic Conference) in Charlestown Invitational at Jeffersonville, Saturday.


• General boys second in tri-meet: Jake Matthews (shot put, discus) and sprinter Marquise Parrish each won two events as the Generals placed second in a home triangular meet on Thursday.

In a girls’ dual meet at Clarksville, Charlestown’s Megan Brooks was first in the shot and discus.

• Hornets win tri-meet: Luke Davidson shot a 39 to earn medalist honors, leading Henryville to a triangular-meet victory at Champions Pointe Golf Club. Christian Academy’s Jayson Arrell fired a 47 as the Warriors fielded an incomplete team.
