H.S. SOFTBALL: NO. 11 FOR BULLDOGS

New Albany takes care of Red Devils on Monday, 5-3

JEFFERSONVILLE — New Albany picked up its 10th win of the season on Monday with a 5-3 victory over host Jeffersonville in a make-up game.

Senior Brittany Jones led the Bulldogs (11-3) at the plate with a 3-for-4 effort, which included a double. She had three RBIs. New Albany junior McKenna Watson was 2-for-3, while teammate Sidney Rudy ended up going 2-for-4.

Bulldogs’ starting pitcher Hannah Morton got the victory. In a complete-game effort, the sophomore right-hander allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits. She struck out two and walked two.

The only inning where Morton ran into trouble was the bottom of the fifth. With New Albany leading 4-0, the Red Devils (6-5) scored three runs to pull within one.

With two out, Jeff’s Emma Coons smacked a two-run double and then scored on the play thanks to a Bulldog error.

But New Albany answered in the top of the seventh with an insurance run.

“We made some mistakes as a team today,” Red Devil coach Jodi Bradley said. “They got hits with runners on and we didn’t. The girls are working hard and we hope they will come together come sectional time.”

Jeff’s Courtney Shepherd and Janel Nelson each went 2-for-3. Nelson had a double. Red Devil starter Kayleigh Thomas went the distance, giving up nine hits and a walk with two strikeouts. The five runs Thomas gave up were earned.

New Albany hosts Providence today. Jeff will travel to Clarksville on Wednesday.
