H.S. CROSS COUNTRY: Highlanders finish 19th at state

Kotowski leads the way in 69th

TERRE HAUTE — With 454 points, Floyd Central finished 19th in the state at Saturday’s state finals meet at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute.

The Highlanders had two runner complete the course in under 20 minutes and all seven crossed the stripe in under 22 minutes.

“We feel good about it,” Floyd Central coach Carl Hook said. “We felt going into it, if we got a super day out of everybody, we could maybe be 15th. Under 20th is a great day for us. We were pretty pleased.”

Once again, sophomore Lydia Kotowski led the Highlanders. She finished 69th overall in 19:29.

“We got a good solid run out of Lydia again,” Hook said. “She competed well and ran a good race.”

Also for Floyd, sophomore Kassidy Manning finished 81st in 19:35, sophomore Madison Barney was 146th in 20:38 and freshman Morgan Paul finished in 20:39 for 147th and junior Gabrielle Rodriguez came in 174th in 21:06.

“Our two best races of the day were from Kassidy Manning and Morgan Paul,” Hook said. “We got really great races out of them. Madison Barney is just solid every week.”

Rounding out the field for the Highlanders were seniors Jamie Bierman in 189th and Zoe Doebbler in 193rd.

“Our two seniors, Zoe Doebbler and Jamie Bierman, were racing in state for the first time in their career and it really meant a lot to them,” Hook said. “They’ve been a big part of this program for really six years and they’ve always talked about going to state. It was a great day for us to go up there as a team to cap off a great season. It was a very good day all the way around.”

Also in the girls’ meet, Silver Creek’s Mackenzie Crouch was the second-high finishing local runner. She finished 73rd in 19:31. Henryville freshman Cia Greene came in 89th in her first trip to the state meet. She finished the Wabash Valley course in 19:42.

North Harrison junior Ashton Bosler came in 42nd overall in a time of 19:06.

Borden’s Julien Magallanes was the lone local boy to make the state meet. He was 104th in 16:92.

Carmel took the team titles in both races. Greyhound senior Kelcy Welch edged Columbus North’s Mackenzie Caldwell to win the girls’ race. Terre Haute South senior Jackson Bertoli claimed the boys’ title.
