FLOYDS KNOBS —
It looked as if Floyd Central would run Providence High School off the field after the first quarter of Friday’s contest, but the Pioneers rallied to make a game of the tilt before ultimately falling 60-34 at Ron Weigleb Stadium.
The Highlanders found the end zone on their first four possessions of the game. The scoring started when Floyd Central (1-1) quarterback Colton Kimm found Austin Carl for a 48-yard touchdown strike with 9:52 left in the first quarter.
Carl would be a popular target for Kimm in the first half. Following two rushing touchdowns, including an 8-yard scamper by running back Garry Posey, Carl caught a 53-yard pass from Kimm to put Floyd Central up 25-0 with 11:02 remaining in the second quarter.
The Pioneers would battle back.
Providence[0-2] marched 66 yards using just four plays and 1:06 off the clock on their next possession, as Pioneer quarterback Nathan Banet completed a 49-yard pass to Dorian Noel which set Providence up at the Highlander 15.
Two plays later Banet found senior wide receiver Mason Hublar with a 12 yard touchdown pass. Following the extra point, the Pioneers cut the lead to 25-7 with 10:48 left in the first half.
Providence was able to slow down Floyd Central’s offense for the remainder of the half and forced a pair of turnovers thanks to standout senior Owen Mattingly, who picked off two Kimm passes in the second quarter.
But the Pioneers failed to capitalize off the interceptions and trailed the Highlanders 25-7 at half time.
Providence quickly cut into the Floyd Central lead in the third quarter, as the Pioneers took advantage of a good kick return and scored on a 19 yard touchdown reception by Noel and trailed 25-14 with 11:33 left in the third quarter.
After the teams traded possessions without a score, Floyd Central senior running back Elijah Miller found the end zone for the second time Friday when he ran nine yards for a touchdown. The extra point put the Highlanders on top 32-14.
Providence quickly responded on their next possession, using just three plays to march 44 yards for a score. The series was capped by a 26 yard touchdown reception by Mattingly which cut the lead to 32-20 after the Pioneers failed to convert the two-point try.
Providence would come no closer, as Floyd Central put the game out of reach on its next possession.
Senior running back Nick Uhl, seemingly wrapped up and stopped for a modest gain by several Pioneer defenders, kept his legs churning and broke free from a pile of Providence players and trotted 30 yards for a touchdown just before the end of the third quarter.
Posey intercepted Banet on the following Providence possession, then he capped off a 5-play drive for Floyd Central with a 3-yard touchdown rush, his second score of the game.
After the extra point, the Highlanders led 46-20 with 9:17 left in the contest. Senior Floyd Central defensive back Gabriel Kennedy further left his mark on the game when he picked up a short Providence punt and raced 55 yards for a touchdown with 7:34 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Kennedy also had a key interception in the first half as Providence was attempting to cut into the Floyd Central lead.
Providence senior running back Conner Johnson added two late rushing touchdowns, but junior Floyd Central running back Gaige Klingsmith also broke a 50-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter to put an exclamation mark on the Highlanders offensive outbreak.
Providence fell on the road to New Albany last week, and Floyd Central was defeated at home by Louisville Male in its opener.
Providence will host Holy Cross this Friday, while Floyd Central will hit the road for the time this season when it travel to Madison for its Hoosier Hills Conference opener.
