New Albany catcher Garrett Sherrell earned a spot on the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association Class 4A All-State team on Monday.
Sherrell is the second Bulldog in three seasons to make the Class 4A squad. Former New Albany shortstop Jordan Striegel got on the All-State squad in 2011.
Sherrell hit over .500 last season for the Bulldogs. He has signed a national letter of intent to play NCAA Division I baseball next season at Arkansas-Little Rock.
Four Clark-Floyd area players got honorable-mention votes for the 4A squad. Those players were Jeffersonville’s Drew Ellis and Trent Astle, Floyd Central senior Derek DeSpain and New Albany junior Tucker Marcum.
All five players made the 2013 News and Tribune All-Area team, with Astle being named the Area Player of the Year. Astle compiled a 7-2 record with a 1.08 earned-run average this past season.
Recent Charlestown graduate Tyler Willinger was a Class 3A All-State honorable-mention pick for the second time in three seasons. The Pirates’ center fielder had a .452 batting average last season, while making the All-Mid-Southern Conference team and the News and Tribune All-Area first team.
North Harrison’s Tyler Cockerham joined Willinger on the Class 3A All-State honorable-mention list.
South Central’s Jason Boston earned a spot on the Class A All-State honorable-mention list.
C’TOWN SOFTBALL DUO MAKE ALL-STATE TEAM
The solid Charlestown softball pair of Alli Webster and Alyssa Price have earned spots on the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association All-State team.
Webster was a second-team selection. The two-time defending News and Tribune Area Player of the Year had a 17-5 record with a 1.08 ERA last season while batting .516 at the plate.
Price had a .528 batting average with five home runs and 33 RBIs as she made the News and Tribune All-Area team.
Price also was an honorable-mention selection to the ICGSA Academic All-State team. Joining Price as honorable-mention picks were New Albany’s Sidney Rudy, New Washington’s Kayla Sexton and Providence’s Morgan Boone.
HANDFUL OF AREA TRACK ATHLETES NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-STATE
Four local girls’ track athletes have made the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches Academic All-State team.
Three are from Floyd Central in seniors Alyssa Moore and Leah Wolf and junior Zoe Doebbler. Eastern junior Nancy Dalton also got selected.
Earning honorable-mention votes were Providence senior Jannelle Marriott, Pioneers’ junior Charmaine Solis and Floyd Central senior Jeni Fifer.
Providence juniors Alex Grove and Nicholas Reas were honorable-mention picks for the Academic All-State boys’ team.
