Wednesday’s schedule girls’ tennis regional championship at Silver Creek between four-time defending champion Floyd Central and Jeffersonville was postponed after a brief rain shower and the threat of oncoming storms.
The match has been rescheduled for today at 4:30 p.m. at Silver Creek.
“Everyone has a cell phone, so everyone’s a weatherman now,” Floyd coach Rick Miller joked. “I’d like to have stayed any longer, but it probably wouldn’t have gotten in anyway.”
After beating Jeffersonville 4-1 in the regular season, the Highlanders are the clear favorite to win their fifth consecutive regional crown and advance to Saturday’s Jasper Semistate.
“The girls are excited and looking forward to it,” Miller said. “They were fired up and a little disappointed [about the postponement], but I think they’ll be fine.”
Miller likes his team’s chances in at least four spots. The one concern is at No. 1 doubles where Floyd’s Whitney Batliner and Dana Frank will take on Red Devil veterans Jules Jenks and Emily Lewis.
“That’s the spot that will be the toughest, because they have Jenks and Lewis,” Miller admitted. “They have two really good veterans who have been together for a long time and this is the first year [together for Batliner and Frank]. That’s the only spot that I’m really concerned about. I’m greedy. I want everyone to win. We need momentum heading into semistate and state.”
Despite an outstanding season that has included a Hoosier Hills Conference title and their 13th sectional crown in a row, it hasn’t been the easiest season for the Highlanders. Only one regular varsity player — Alexis Applegate at No. 2 singles — has played in every match because of illnesses and injuries.
“Winning five in a row would be an awesome thing,” Miller said. “Every team is different and we’ve never had this many injuries and illnesses, but thank goodness our subs have come through. I’m really impressed with the depth of this team — and the togetherness. It’s been a special, special bunch.
“I hope it doesn’t come to an end for a couple more weeks.”
