Postponements move Jeff, Floyd clash to this morning

All HHC, others moved back due to weather

JEFFERSONVILLE — Jeffersonville and Floyd Central will have to wait about 17 more hours before their much-anticipated Hoosier Hills Conference baseball championship game.

After rain washed away Friday’s showdown, the game was rescheduled for 11 a.m. today. With the Don Poole Stadium outfield still under water, getting the game in today is still in question.

If the game can not be played today, it will be moved to 6 p.m. or 7 p.m. on Monday.

“We have to try to get it in by 1 [this afternoon],” Jeff coach Derek Ellis said. “Both schools have prom.”

The top-ranked and unbeaten Highlanders (23-0) beat Jeff 6-5 on Trey Fulton’s walk-off single on April 4.

Jeff, which began the season ranked No. 2 in the state before a 2-3 start, has won 10 straight and is 13-3. The Red Devils relish a second shot at Casey LaDuke’s unbeaten bunch.

“We’re in the championship game of the Hoosier Hills and that’s where we were hoping we’d be,” Ellis said. “We always look forward to playing Casey and Floyd Central. They’re a great team with great kids and great coaches and we’re looking forward to playing them for a championship.”

LaDuke is impressed that his team is unbeaten after playing such a tough schedule, including a come-from-behind win over rival New Albany to start the tournament.

“Going into this week, we knew New Albany would be a tough game and [we would] possibly be meeting Jeff again and that was going to be tough. We look forward to it.”

Winning today’s championship would be another achievement for the 2013 Highlanders, but it’s hardly the end goal, LaDuke said.

“It’s important. We want to play well, but win or lose, our highest goal is still to win the sectional,” he said. “We look at [today] like we’d like to win [the HHC] and it could help us prepare to win the sectional.”

Two other Hoosier Hills championships had to be rescheduled. Jeffersonville was supposed to play for the softball championship at Jennings County on Friday, but the game has been moved to 6 p.m. on Monday. Floyd Central’s heavily-favored tennis team faces Columbus East in the championship. That match has been moved to Monday at 5:30 p.m. in Columbus.

Also today is the seventh-place baseball game between New Albany and Bedford North Lawrence at BNL. That game is scheduled for noon.

The consolation tennis match will be played Monday at 5:30 p.m. when Jeffersonville hosts Jennings County. The fifth-place tennis match — Jennings County at New Albany — will also be played at 11 a.m. today.

The HHC fifth-place softball game between New Albany and Madison has been moved to 6 p.m. Monday at Prosser.
