As expected, Borden blew by South Central in Wednesday’s Silver Creek Sectional opening round and will now meet the host Dragons in one semifinal this afternoon.
The unbeaten Braves won all five matches in straight sets and dropped just one game. Sarah Hurst at No. 2 singles, Kendyl Wheatly at No. 3 singles and the Borden doubles teams of Paige Kruer and Morgan Mast and Bailee Kruer and McKenzie Owens all won 6-0, 6-0.
South Central’s lone game came in Abby Ellis’s 6-0, 6-1 win over Zoe Zweiblemann.
NEW ALBANY SECTIONAL
Christian Academy and New Albany will face off in today’s New Albany Sectional championship after both teams earned 4-1 victories on Wednesday.
CAI got critical three-set wins from Courtney Brown at No. 3 singles and Kacie Arrell and Callie Allison at No. 2 doubles to get by Corydon Central. Brown beat Bethany Thomas 6-3 in the first set and fell 6-3 in the second before getting a crucial 7-5 win in the third-set tiebreaker. Arrell and Allison dropped the first set to Bridget Kelly and Jody Elser, 6-4, before coming back to win 6-3 in the final two sets.
Erin and Marin Kanii earned easy straight-set victories and both New Albany doubles teams won to give the Bulldogs a 4-1 win over Lanesville. Lauren and Emily Hoffer fell in the first set, 6-3, to Madison Cunningham and Kendra Smith but the sisters then beat the Eagle duo 6-4 in the second and 7-5 in the third for the win. Anne Mattox and Racquel Burch won at No. 2 doubles, beating Paula Klotz and Kaitlyn Matthews 6-1 and 6-2.
FLOYD CENTRAL SECTIONAL
The host Highlanders had no trouble advancing to today’s Floyd Central Sectional semifinal against North Harrison. Floyd defeated Eastern 5-0 without dropping a set.
Olivia Boesing defeated Krista Roberts 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and the Highlanders’ No. 2 doubles team of Catherine Dauby and Erin Patterson earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Halie Mueller and Kristin Potter.
