FLOYDS KNOBS —
Floyd Central claimed its third straight win and moved to 2-0 in Hoosier Hills Conference play behind an explosive rushing attack on Friday, as the Highlanders bested Seymour 84-43 at Ron Weigleb Stadium.
The Highlanders rushed for 357 yards and eight touchdowns in the first half and never looked back.
Junior running back Gaige Klingsmith scored his first of seven first-half touchdowns with 7:34 left in the first quarter when he scampered 21 yards to the end zone.
The Highlanders (3-1, 2-0 HHC) faked the extra point and scored two points on the conversion to take an 8-0 lead. The Owls scored on their next possession when quarterback Austin Sutton tossed a 64-yard touchdown pass to Chase Dover.
Seymour (0-4, 0-3) cut the lead to 8-7, but the Owls would never hold the advantage in the game. The Highlanders scored on just three plays on the next possession as Klingsmith dashed 60 yards to the end zone and, following the extra point, the Highlanders were up 15-7 with 6:20 left in the first quarter.
Senior defensive back Evan Rue had a big game for the Highlanders, as he intercepted two Seymour passes Friday. His first pick — a one-handed diving grab — came with just less than 3 minutes to play in the first quarter, and it setup another Klingsmith touchdown run.
Klingsmith added another score with 1:44 remaining in the first quarter that gave Floyd Central a 29-7 lead.
Floyd Central’s advantage ballooned in the second quarter as senior running back Gabriel Kennedy finished off a drive with a 10-yard touchdown run that put Floyd Central on top 36-7.
Kennedy added another touchdown run in the second half as the Highlanders rushed for 446 yards.
Klingsmith led the way with 242 yards on the ground on 19 attempts and had one reception for 41. Junior quarter Colton Kimm was proficient through the air when needed. He threw for 194 yards and two touchdown passes.
Floyd Central wide receivers Brandon Stout and Austin Carl each had touchdown grabs.
Sutton — who returned to start his first game since being injured during the Owls’ season opener — threw for 315 yards and five touchdowns.
Seymour wide receiver Zach Schlatterer caught 10 passes for 193 yards and four touchdowns.
The Highlanders have reeled off three consecutive victories after losing at home to Louisville Male to start the year. They play at unbeaten Jeffersonville — a 34-11 winner over Madison — next Friday.
